How to Properly Use Soy Wax Melts (and What Not to Do)

Soy wax melts are one of the easiest and most delightful ways to fill your home with fragrance. Whether you are using an electric warmer with a handy timer (3, 6, or 9 hours are the most common settings) or a simple tea light warmer, the method of using your melts is pretty much the same, but there are a few important tips that will help you get the very best scent experience.
Start Fresh, Always
The biggest mistake I hear people make is adding new cubes of wax into wax that has already lost its scent. It seems logical, more wax means more fragrance, right? Unfortunately, it does not work that way. Once wax has released its fragrance, it is essentially “empty.” Adding new cubes on top of old ones only dilutes the fragrance, leaving you with a weaker scent throw.
✨ Pro tip: Always remove the old, unscented wax before adding in new cubes.
How Many Cubes Should You Use?
For my melts, I recommend starting with three cubes (for an average size electric warmer) or one to two cubes for a tea light warmer. That is usually the sweet spot for filling a room with fragrance without overwhelming it. Depending on the warmer you use, you can expect the scent to last 16 to 20 hours total. For many people, this stretches out over several days or even a week if you use a timer. Airflow and room size also play a role. Use your warmer’s timer to help stretch the life of your melts without forgetting them for too long.
Can You Add Essential Oils or Fragrance Oils?
It makes sense to think, “why not add more umph to the melt?” The answer is simple: I do not recommend it.
Here is why:
Wax melts are carefully formulated with the correct fragrance load. Adding more can actually throw off that balance and cause issues.
Not all oils are safe to heat. Some may give off harsh or even unhealthy fumes when warmed.
Too much oil can shorten the life of your warmer or create a mess you do not want to deal with.
It is tempting to extend the life of old wax with a few drops of oil, but trust me, the safest and most effective option is to let that wax go when the scent fades and start fresh with new cubes.
A Quick Note About Packaging (and a Little Treat!)
Right now, my wax melts are packaged in clamshells, but I have been working toward a more eco-friendly packaging option with molds and less plastic. I still have about 700 clamshells to work through (yes, that is a lot), but in the meantime I am running a Buy 2, Get 1 Free deal on wax melts.
It is the perfect chance to stock up for yourself or grab extras as gifts for the holidays.
Illuminate your wax melts the right way.
Using wax melts is all about enjoying your space and making it feel warm, cozy, and personal. Remember:
Always start with fresh wax.
Use about three cubes (depending on the size of your warmer).
Let the fragrance fill your space for hours.
When the scent fades, swap the wax out completely.
Keep it simple, keep it fresh, and your home will thank you.
